Artists Statement
Hi! My name is Bianca J. Russell...but you can call me JustBee. I’m a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and educator, which basically means I make stuff across all kinds of mediums...and I love every messy, magical minute of it. I started dancing at four in Traditional West African Folkloric forms, and that early rhythm still lives in everything I do. The body taught me how to tell stories, hold memory, and move through the world with intention.
Since then, I’ve been doing the work—over 20 years as a professional dancer, nearly three decades of training, and countless hours exploring what it means to let creativity lead. My practice has grown to include music, murals, illustration, graphic and web design, clothing, and teaching. I don’t see these as separate lanes—they all talk to each other, bounce ideas around, and occasionally throw paint at each other.
I like to think of my work as a series of portals—each one opens into the same question: how do we honor our stories, our bodies, and our communities?
My approach is rooted in Black diasporic knowledge, which means my work is layered, intuitive, and unapologetically me. I’m drawn to softness as power, ritual as practice, and imagination as medicine. Whether I’m performing, designing, teaching, or justbe(e)ing, I create spaces where presence, creativity, and connection can thrive.
At the end of the day, what I do is an offering. I make to honor the past, celebrate the present, and open doors for what’s next. And I try to have fun while doing it.

I make music that moves—sometimes sultry, sometimes cinematic, always unapologetically me. Blending R&B, soul, and experimental soundscapes, my songs tell stories of love, longing, and self-discovery. It’s music you feel in your body, in your heart, and sometimes even in your bones.
